the body is a system, yes i can, is a choreographic performance that employs the idea of ‘system as composition’. It stages a series of situations composed of 2 people and some objects. These are variously shaken, agitated and provoked into displaying interesting behaviours.
Presented in a pseudo-scientific vernacular, it is lo-fi, backyard, and literally experimental. Here the artists are cast as researchers, uncovering noteworthy phenomena for consideration by their colleagues, the audience. Just like science, no idea is too silly to investigate.
What emerges is a bloody-minded humour that aims for the profound by way of the simple, framed by a kind of amateur minimalism.
Partly inspired by timeless youtube classics such as Aussie50’s “Front Load Washer Total Carnage - Washer goes Chain Chomp on me” and the simple deadpan aesthetics of UK artists Harrison & Wood, the piece attempts to engage with the profundity of everyday mechanics and celebrates time spent mucking around with friends and stuff.
